Making 10

The most useful facts in this list are the pairs that make 10: 1 + 9, 2 + 8, 3 + 7, 4 + 6 and 5 + 5. Children who know these pairs can solve many larger facts by making a ten first. They also give subtraction facts such as 10 − 3 = 7 for free.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fact family for 1, 2 and 3?

1 + 2 = 3, 2 + 1 = 3, 3 − 1 = 2 and 3 − 2 = 1.

What is the fact family for 5, 5 and 10?

The two parts are equal, so there are two facts: 5 + 5 = 10 and 10 − 5 = 5.

What about families that include zero?

A family like 0, 7 and 7 has 0 + 7 = 7, 7 + 0 = 7, 7 − 0 = 7 and 7 − 7 = 0. We leave the zero families out of the list to keep it short.
