Fact families, made visible
A fact family is a set of related facts that use the same three numbers, like 3 + 4 = 7 and 7 − 3 = 4. Type two numbers and watch the whole family appear.

Type any two numbers. The third number and all the facts appear.
- 3 + 4 = 7
- 4 + 3 = 7
- 7 − 3 = 4
- 7 − 4 = 3
Four facts from three numbers
Take the numbers 3, 4 and 7. They make one addition family with two addition facts and two subtraction facts. Every fact family works this way.
Multiplication and division families work the same way. The numbers 3, 4 and 12 give 3 × 4 = 12, 4 × 3 = 12, 12 ÷ 3 = 4 and 12 ÷ 4 = 3. See multiplication and division fact families.

Built for parents and teachers
Fact families help children see that addition and subtraction are linked, and that multiplication and division are linked. Once a child knows 3 + 4 = 7, they also know 7 − 3 = 4. That connection makes basic facts easier to learn and to remember.
These pages are written for the adults who help children learn: clear definitions, worked examples, and printables you can use straight away.
- Worksheets are generated on the page and the answer key is computed by the same code, so the answers are always correct.
- Triangles, houses and fill-in facts show the same idea in three ways.
- The content supports the ideas behind Common Core standards 1.OA.B.4, 2.OA.B.2 and 3.OA.C.7.

Quick answers
What is a fact family?
A fact family is a group of facts that use the same three numbers. For 2, 5 and 7 the family is 2 + 5 = 7, 5 + 2 = 7, 7 − 2 = 5 and 7 − 5 = 2.
How many facts are in a fact family?
Most fact families have four facts. When the two smaller numbers are the same, such as 5, 5 and 10, there are only two different facts: 5 + 5 = 10 and 10 − 5 = 5.
Which grade learns fact families?
Children usually meet addition and subtraction fact families in first and second grade, and multiplication and division fact families in third grade.
Why do fact families matter?
They teach that operations are connected. A child who knows one fact can work out three more, and can check an answer by using the inverse operation.
