Division fact families
Division fact families show how each division fact comes from a multiplication fact. For 5, 8 and 40: 40 ÷ 5 = 8, 40 ÷ 8 = 5, 5 × 8 = 40 and 8 × 5 = 40.
Division fact families show how each division fact comes from a multiplication fact. For 5, 8 and 40, the family is 40 ÷ 5 = 8, 40 ÷ 8 = 5, 5 × 8 = 40 and 8 × 5 = 40. If you know the times tables, you already know the division facts.
What is a division fact family?
A division fact family uses a product and two factors. The product is the number you divide. Divide it by one factor and you get the other factor. That gives two division facts. The two multiplication facts with the same numbers complete the family.
- 4 × 5 = 20
- 5 × 4 = 20
- 20 ÷ 4 = 5
- 20 ÷ 5 = 4
- 3 × 9 = 27
- 9 × 3 = 27
- 27 ÷ 3 = 9
- 27 ÷ 9 = 3
- 6 × 8 = 48
- 8 × 6 = 48
- 48 ÷ 6 = 8
- 48 ÷ 8 = 6
- 9 × 9 = 81
- 81 ÷ 9 = 9
How to use a fact family to divide
- Write the division problem: 40 ÷ 5 = ?
- Ask: what times 5 makes 40? That is 5 × ? = 40.
- Use your times table: 5 × 8 = 40.
- The answer is 8. Check the other fact: 40 ÷ 8 = 5.
Two ways to think about division
- Sharing. 40 stickers shared equally between 5 children is 8 stickers each.
- Grouping. 40 stickers put in groups of 5 make 8 groups.
Both questions use the same fact family, 5, 8 and 40.

Frequently asked questions
What is the division fact family for 6, 9 and 54?
54 ÷ 6 = 9 and 54 ÷ 9 = 6, with 6 × 9 = 54 and 9 × 6 = 54.
Can you divide by zero in a fact family?
No. Division by zero is not defined, so zero facts never include a division by zero.
